Tissue Cancels Greenfield Mill Plans
Georgia-Pacific Tissue LLC, the newly formed
joint venture between Georgia-Pacific Corp. (G-P) and Wisconsin
Tissue Co., a subsidiary of Chesapeake Corp., has canceled plans to
build a Greenfield tissue mill in Weldon, N.C. Dec

Georgia-Pacific Corp. (G-P) announced plans to
install a new 80,000 tpy tissue paper machine at its Port Hudson
mill in Zachary, La.Project cost is estimated at $90 million with
completion slated for 2001. Dec

buys "NISA" Portuguese Tissue Company
In Stockholm, SCA acquired all the
shares in the Portuguese tissue company Nisa, which has a
market share of approximately 20%.
Based on the low per-capita consumption, Portugal is expected to be
one of the strongest growth markets in Western Europe during the

Wastepaper
Prices are Going UP
Prices for the wastepaper grades most commonly
used in tissue production (sorted office paper, sorted post consumer
white ledger, and coated book stock) were up almost 80% in November
from a year ago, and the price of benchmark northern bleached
softwood kraft pulp is up 22% over November 1998. Nov

Clark Corporation
K-C, number two in the
U.S. commercial and industrial (C&I) market, issued a price
increase on its away-from-home tissue products, effective January
18.This is the first price increase since November 1, 1997 and is
said to be due to significant price increases in virgin and recycled
fibers and in energy, labor and transportation costs. The price
increase "up to 10%" applies to towels, tissues, napkins
and wipers. Nov 1999.
Kimberly
Mexico to boost tissue
Kimberly-Clark de Mexico will undertake a $150
million expansion in 1999, with a resulting boost in production
capacity of 15% to 20%. The company has about 450,000 mtons of paper
capacity among four mills that produce consumer tissue, uncoated
free-sheet and specialty papers. The investment will be on the
tissue side and the additional production will be in the marketplace
by early 2000. An additional $200 million is slated to be invested
at K-C's Mexican operations next year. Oct

Fort
James to build European tissue PM
Fort James Corp. announced plans to build a
60,000 mtpy tissue machine in western Europe, with start-up planned
in 2001. The project will be financed largely through existing
capital budgets. Further details were not available from the

European
tissue projects in the works
Procter & Gamble will start its new 60,000
mtpy tissue machine at the Trafford Park mill near Manchester,
England, the end of 1999. The $163 million project is ahead of
schedule and was originally set to go online in 2000. Also in the
U.K., Kimberly-Clark Corp. said it would close its 38,000 mtpy
Larkside mill in England by the end of 2000. The mill's production
will be relocated to the Barrow-in-Furness unit in northern England.
In Turkey, Viking Kagit ve Seluloz AS started commercial production
in August on a new tissue machine at its mill in Aliaga. Valmet
supplied the 27,000 mtpy machine which will produce bath issue,
towels and napkins. The $25 million project includes a de-inked pulp

P&G
to purchase Chinese tissue mills
Taiwan's Long Chen Paper has signed a
definitive agreement to sell two tissue mills to Procter &
Gamble Co. (P&G). Under the deal, P&G will acquire the
ching-sui mill in Taiwan and the Suzhou mill in China. The move
follows a non-binding letter of intent signed in May. The $115
million transaction is expected to close by October, Long Chen said.

Bay West recent price increase in their
commercial and industrial line became effective as of November 24,
1999. The increase has been due to higher recovered paper costs.

to install new German tissue PM
Omega paper, a subsidiary of Werra Paper
Wernshause GmbH, will install a new tissue former from Beloit Corp.
in Wernshausen, Germany. Beloit will supply the new PM on a turnkey
basis. The machine will be 3.45m wide, with a maximum speed of 1600
m/min. The new PM will manufacture hand towel products and tissue
from 100 percent de-inked fiber and have a capacity of approximately
115 mtpd. Sept 1999.
