Shaw Shahery Selected to List of America's Best

Shaw Shahery of Convermat Corp., Great Neck, NY, was selected by America's Best, the Denver-based annual newsletter, to be on the list of America's Best of 1999.  Shaw  Shahery came to the U.S. in 1969 in search of a college education. What he found was an opportunity that ultimately brought him global business and international respect. He earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Maryland, then an MBA in International Business from New York University. Later, he completed post-graduate work in International Finance at NYU.

In 1976, Shaw founded Convermat Corp. to market jumbo rolls of tissue and related converting materials. His brother, Frank, an outstanding executive in his own right, joined him in 1984. Today, their company has clients in more than 80 countries and handles in excess of 100,000 tons of tissue annually, including a record volume of more than 140,000 tons in 1998. Industry experts describe Convermat as the top independent broker as measured both by tonnage moved in the U.S. and by international expertise. Outside the office, Shaw is an active supporter of numerous charitable causes and a devoted family man. "I never turn down a request for a worthy cause, and I cherish the time I get to spend with my wife and children," he said. His wife, Shirin, is trained as a Clinical Therapist but currently works full-time as a homemaker. Shaw and Shirin frequently plan outings to museums, sporting events, and cultural activities with their three sons and daughter.
